HOME RESTAURANT HOTEL BAR FIND US ABOUT US CONTACT Some of the HISTORY surrounding the Muckley Corner Hotel (known, for an interval as the Olde Corner House Hotel).
Enoch Cresswell is seated with Fanny Cresswell behind the bar. Two of their nine children are shown (Jack and Doll). Edward was yet to be born when this was taken. The picture we believe was taken about 1900-02. Enoch and Fanny (nee Lakin) ran the pub from 1890 to 1902 when they moved to Heath Hayes where Enoch became a coal miner. The man in the foreground is unknown. We are indebted to David and Kathy Cresswell who very kindly sent us this photo and information. If you look carefully, you will see clearly that some parts of the bar shown in the photo are still there If you know something about the history of Muckley Corner and would like to tell us about it, please either drop in or send us an email - you will find an email form here CONTACT Parts of the building date back to 1683 - it was indeed the original Old Coaching Inn. Trading well and expanding under private ownership until 1891, when the whole premises were sold together with 8 acres of ground to a small brewery who built a new Inn (which explains the superb cellars) on part of the grounds and selling off the buildings which were converted to small cottages. These cottages have since been re-acquired and now form part of the hotel.
You might wonder where the name
Muckley Corner comes from - well, an article on the internet tells us that
it means the great leah (a wood or clearing in woodland) If you would like to see the full article, please click HERE
